Communications Coach 3 Things To Do Before an Interview - Jobscan Blog

Communications Coach 3 Things To Do Before an Interview - Jobscan BlogPosted on March 19, 2018January 28, 2019 by Rachel Beohm If youre in the job market, chances are youve come across a multitude of articles on the importance of making a positive first impression while networking or in a job interview. And for good reason You send a message about yur competence and likeability long before you open your mouth. Therefore, youre supposed to dress professionally, avoid falling asleep in the waiting area, be nice, offer a firm handshake, smile, keep your arms uncrossed, and the list goes on and on.Theres nothing wrong with these tips. In fact, theyre great (if perhaps somewhat obvious). But if you constantly run through a mental list of dos and donts and worry about how you come across, you will shoot yourself in the foot. So stop worrying about getting every detail right and instead do something much mora proactive and usefulPrepare.Prepare yourself, your mind and body, not just your cl othing or your resume or your answers to possible interview questions. Your ability to make a great first impression starts long before the day of your interview. Get ready in advance and the first impression will take care of itself. Here are three things to do before an interview or networking event in order to make a great first impression1.) PracticeThat long list of dos and donts for making a good impression? Theyre all valid. But as with any test, cramming rarely works. If you dont want to cross your arms at a networking event (good tip), start practicing in everyday conversation. If you want to avoid slouching during your interview (definitely), start sitting up straight at your current job. If you want to smile and make eye contact with your interviewer (yup definitely want that), start smiling and making eye contact whenever youre interacting with people. All those things you want to do to make a good impression need to be second nature. Its a lot easier to be your usual sel f than to try out a bunch of new behaviors in a stressful situation. So change your usual. In addition, its awfully hard to think clearly when your brainpower is consumed with trying to look good. When making a good first impression has become a habit, you have more processing power for the conversation.2.) Decide how you want to berather than what you want to do or say. When youve got an interview or networking event coming up, choose a few words (no more than three) to describe how you want to be. It could be anything confident, dedicated, caring, professional, creative, smart, funny, passionate, bold, thoughtful, experienced, driven, quirky, friendly, decisive, hard-working You choose. For one minute, imagine how it looks and feels to be that way. Keep your word(s) in mind and your speech and behavior will naturally align. Often, we get hung up on what we should say. We figure out a script in our heads for answering questions and demonstrating our capabilities. But as you may hav e noticed, life rarely follows the script. People surprise us. Then we either stubbornly stick to the script we prepared or fumble for words as we try to recover. Neither of those makes a very good impression Certainly, its a good idea to be prepared for possible interview questions and have an idea of what you want to say. Do that. But instead of relying on having all the right answers, rely on yourself. Be grounded in who you are and what you bring to the table. Even if you dont get all the answers quite right, if youre crystal clear on who you are and how you want to be, you will come across that way. 3.) Release tensionDo this daily as you prepare to meet people at job fairs or networking events or in interviews. But also make a conscious choice and effort to do it before and during the event itself. Breathe deeply and let go of unnecessary tension. You dont want to be so relaxed that youre slouching or come across as nonchalant. Stay alert. Yet releasing tension through breathi ng brings many benefits You will look more comfortable and confident. You will feel more comfortable and confident. Youll avoid nervous tics like bouncing knees or twiddling thumbs. Youll be able to think more clearly and quickly. First impressions are important. Yet worrying about it will backfire for two reasons First, worrying shows up in your nonverbal communication, and that makes a bad impression Second, worrying gets you stuck in your head, so you cant be present and fully show up.Want to make a good first impression? Stop trying. Instead, prepare yourself ahead of time and then trust that you can do it. Managers play a direct role in how loyal employees feel to that business. Here are some ways to ensure that your staff members develop a connection to your companyGive them honest, updated information about whats going onWhether its big stuff, like a merger or a sale, or smaller things, like changes being made to the cafeteria, when your employees are kept in the loop, they know that they matter and are respected. In turn, this helps them to feel happier and more loyal to your business. When team members are constantly wondering about whats really going on within the company, they feel highly disconnected, making it easy for them to turn on your business should another opportunity present itself.Val ue employees ideasWant your team members to be loyal? Start treating them like equals and not just minions or cogs in the wheel. Listen to their ideas and suggestions, offer praise when its earned, and work to build camaraderie within the office. When people feel as though theyre truly part of a bigger group, theyre more likely to want to stick with that team.Allow people to advance within the organizationMany businesses actually encourage talented people to go elsewhere and dont even realize it, because they fail to present growth opportunities within that organization. If an individual feels like theyll never get more responsibility or money unless they leave your company, theyll probably be on a continuous hunt for other opportunities. However, when you make it possible to grow and develop within your business, you eliminate the need to look elsewhere.Find out what matters to your teamFor some people, salary is the most important aspect of a job. For others, its about a flexible schedule or vacation time or office perks (free coffee, for example). Attire for interviewing on the sly

Attire for einstellungsgesprching on the slyAttire for interviewing on the slyWhen interviewing and employed, use these tips on dressing down interview attire for the office. In a corporate culture where business casual is making waves, showing up to work in a three-piece suit is a dead giveaway to your colleagues that your dentist appointment is really an interview - somewhere else.Fortunately, there are ways to tone down your look for the office but avoid a changing overhaul in the cramped restroom before your interview. By pairing a few casual items with your more formal interview attire, it will be anybodys guess why you look just a little more polished today.Women1. Wear flat boots or ballet flats.Leave your gorgeous pumps in your car or under your desk in favor of lower heels. Bare legs and ballet flats or riding boots with tights will instantly dress down your interview appropriate skirt or dress. Bonus Your feet will thank you.2. Trade your jacket for a soft cardigan.Layer a cozy cardigan in a soft color over your interview blouse or dress. Cardigans evoke a sense of casualness not usually appropriate for a formal interview. Leave your jacket hanging in your car or at your desk. Bonus It will stay wrinkle-free.3. Add a fashionable scarf or trendy jewelry.A boldly colored necklace or Pucci printed scarf are a bit too fashion-forward for a formal interview. Add these fun accessories to your interview attire for a whimsical look just dont forget to tone them down before your interview. Bonus Compliments from your colleagues.Men1. Leave off your jacket and tie.In this case, it is all about what you dont wear. If a formal suit isnt in your office dress code, simply leave your jacket and tie off till the interview. Bonus Comfort Isnt that enough?2. Wear a sports coat or pullover sweater. If you prefer to wear a coat to the office, opt for a more casual sports coat or a cozy pullover. These layers will instantly dress down your suit pants and button down. Bonus Style points for mixing it up.3. Keep your shoes casual.Leave your shiny Allen Edmonds under your desk in favor of a casual loafer or driving shoe. A low-key shoe even when worn with suit pants clearly will deter your colleagues from suspecting that you are looking for work elsewhere. Bonus Your shoeshine will stay fresh.

Seven Internship Tactics to Grow your Talent Pipeline

Seven Internship Tactics to Grow your Talent PipelineSeven Internship Tactics to Grow your Talent PipelineSeven Internship Tactics to Grow your Talent Pipeline DeZubeThe race is on to attract and recruit todays interns. Companies no longer wait until senior year to head to campus and make job offers. These days, theyre using internships starting as early as freshman year to create a talent pipeline. Its a shift thats increased competition to recruit interns, especially STEM college graduates. Here are some of the internship tactics that businesses are employing to attract young talent. Recruiting Interns Early OnWhile some companies use interns to cover work assignments for vacationing employees, or as temporary staff to handle heavy workloads, 57% of companies say the primary purpose of internship programs is to develop talent for full-time employment, according to a surveyby Michigan State Universitys Collegiate Employment Research Institute. That may be why some companies now recruit interns using tactics traditionally reserved for full-time hires. At STEM-focused Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, California , one of Judy Fishers student interns was offered golden handcuff-style stock options. If she returned to the startup the following summer, or opted to stay on campus and do research instead, she would get to keep the options. However if she decided to work for a competitor, she would forfeit the options, Fisher says.Companies are also pushing intern retention by making year-ahead offers. As part of the continuing demand for software engineering talent, organizations are hiring first- and second-year students while they are on summer internships to return the next summer, Fisher says. The reason is an organization is afraid of students returning to campus to find many other opportunities. What Interns WantIf stock options are leid on the internship benefits menu at your organization, you can still compete for student talent by using these seven tactics1. Tell th em what theyll learn.Todays Millennial students see internships as resume builders, so a job posting that describes the skills the intern will acquire will appeal to them.Students want an environment where they will be able to take away a lot of knowledge, says Jason Parks, president of full-service digital marketing agency The Media Captain in Columbus, Ohio. He offers to come in early or on weekends to teach interns about the latest digital marketing trends. This type of individualized attention lets them know I want them to contribute to our kollektiv, but I also want them to learn a lot, he says.2. Create significant experiences. No one wants to fetch coffee and rolls any more, but every job includes some mundane tasks. Find ways to mix the exciting with the routine. Coming up with a short-term, a midterm and a long-term project for each intern keeps interest going all summer.Students may not know what they want, but they know they want a significant experience, says Pushkala Rama n, Ph.D, associate prof of marketing at Texas Womans University, Denton, Texas.Small-business owners who lack human resources expertise can reach out to local community colleges or universities for help setting up an internship program and selecting tasks for interns, says Mary Ann Gaschnig, a job developer in the career advising department at Keene State College, Keene, New Hampshire.Theres usually a career center and those representatives are dedicated to helping make those connections between the education community and the business community, she says. The internship coordinator will know which skills students most want to acquire, whether thats database management, business development research or the all-importantsoft skills.3. Put interns on teams.College students are used to working in teams. They live in dorms and work on group projects in classes. If possible, slot interns onto teams where they work alongside more experienced employees. At The Media Captain, the firms physic ally open workspace environment helps foster teamwork, Parks says. Our team is relatively small with four full-time employees. When a candidate steps into our office, they can sense the team unity and that if they were to end up working for our firm, they would be part of a close-knit team atmosphere, he says.4. Set up social events.Millennials are socially oriented, so pair up interns with mentors or partners. If you have them, connect them with your employees social or affinity groups. Not large enough to have affinity networks? Find an after-work activity everyone can enjoy, whether thats a kickball team or entering poker tournaments. The smart companies have structured internship programs where theyre meeting with the interns during social activities, Fisher says. Smaller companies can achieve the same results from a regular lunch date or night out with the intern.5. Use interns to recruit interns. One of the easiest ways to recruit more interns is to have existing interns recruit their friends and classmates. If youve hired an intern, ask them to come back next year and to bring a friend, Fisher says.Send new graduate hires back to their alma maters to work career fairs. Theyll remember the freshman and sophomores, she adds.6. Network to fill internships. The age-old strategy of telling everyone you know that youre looking for a job also works for those on the other side of the hiring desk.Tell everyone you know that youre hiring, Gaschnig says. Whether its talking with colleagues at a conference or the local rotary meeting, its good to share that information. You never know who knows someone who might be looking for an internship.7. Dont limit your majors.Accepting internship applications only from students pursuing a limited set of majors can unnecessarily limit the applicant pool. Instead of focusing on majors, focus on the skills required to do the job. An English major with wicked good Excel skills might be a better fit than a business major who has nev er used the software in the business world.Competing for interns doesnt have to be an expensive or even time-consuming proposition. Every organization has something to offer college students. Figuring out what that is at your firm can help you devise an internship that delivers value to both the company and the intern and puts you a step ahead in the recruiting game.

Study You make 5 times as many writing errors on your phone

Study You make 5 times as many writing errors on yur phoneStudy You make 5 times as many writing errors on your phoneNew research from digital writing assistant Grammarly found that we make an average of five times as many writing errors on our phones than when we use PCs, even though fewer words are typed on mobile.More specifically, they calculated that it amounts to 42 errors for every 100 words typed on mobile, versus just eight for every 100 words typed on a computer.Grammarly also identifiedthe nine most common problems that arise when communicating on mobile for business purposes, including wordiness, misspelled words, passive voice, vague words and phrases and missing articles. As for how the research was carried out, Michael Mager on the Grammarly Communications Team told Laddersthat Grammarly detected errors from millions of users typing with our writing assistant software on both mobile and PC.So, should you send important emails on your cell phone? It depends on the nature of the situation. For instance, if youre emailing on your phone, youre likely to be doing something else simultaneously, like having your device function as a second screen while you watch television. This is why you should be extra careful sending to messages to people at work from your mobile device- especially your boss.Diane Gottsman, an author, modern manners and etiquette expert, and owner of The Protocol School of Texas, illustrates why its important to avoid grammar and spelling mistakes in emails written on phones in a poston her website.Be sure to take the extra few minutes to read over your email before you hit send. If spell check is not turned on, refer to the email settings on your mobile device to activate this feature. Auto spell check can also be dangerous, especially if you arent taking that extra minute to re-read your response, she writes. Typing to when you meant to type do can completely change the meaning of your message. And thats a best case auto-correct scen arioRemember to caution others that youre typing on your phone the right wayJillian Kumagai (now a web producer at ProPublica), previously wrote on Mashables site about how when emailing on mobile, you should change your signature as you see fit.Avoid looking tacky by omitting the mobile signature that reads, Sent from my iPhone or Sent from my Android. Its really easy to change your signature in the Gmail app. Consider creating the generic signature (name, company, contact information) for your phone if you send many emails for business purposes, she writes. If you know youre prone to typos on your phone, consider including a message apologizing for mobile typos. We get it Accidents happen. Typos are almost impossible to avoid, but thats why you should be extra careful when typing a business message on your phone.
